I’m writing to spread the word about the city’s proposal to remove funding for DC’s Early Childhood Educator Pay Equity Fund from the upcoming budget. This programme, established over the past year and a half, aimed to supplement the pay of early childhood educators in licensed childcare facilities to align with the wages of DC Public Schools (DCPS) early childhood educators. Many educators, primarily black and brown women and district residents with children themselves, have benefited from this programme, which ensured fair pay for the first time.
However, this programme faces elimination from the 2025 budget, with a hearing scheduled this Thursday in front of the DC Council to allow for public input. If the programme is cut, it would result in a substantial pay decrease of approximately 20% for many educators.
