Seattle Public Schools are discontinuing their gifted students program to address ‘historical inequity’

< 1 min read

Seattle Public Schools are phasing out their advanced placement program, which includes specialized schools and classes for highly capable students, in favor of a more inclusive and equitable approach by the 2027–28 school year. The district aims to address historical inequity by introducing a whole-classroom model where students of varying abilities learn together with differentiated instruction. Critics, including some parents, argue that eliminating the specialized program will harm advanced students and suggest expanding the gifted program instead. Concerns also arise about budget constraints and the feasibility of implementing the new model effectively. Despite assurances from the district, skepticism remains about the effectiveness of the proposed changes.
