Texas school districts are capitalizing on a federal grant program, part of the $5 billion Clean Bus Program by the EPA, funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The Biden administration announced that Texas districts will receive a total of $26 million for electric school buses. Fort Worth ISD, Alief ISD, Austin ISD, and San Antonio ISD are among those slated to receive grants ranging from $5.9 million to $7.9 million to purchase electric buses. Three companies, Envirotech Vehicles, Lion Electric, and Highland CSB 1, LLC, will receive $78 million to supply these buses. Despite their higher initial cost—$350,000 to $400,000 compared to diesel buses—the electric models are expected to save $100,000 in fuel and maintenance costs over 15 years. Concerns remain about the impact on Texas’ power grid.
