New Car Seat Law Goes Into Effect Aug. 1

New car seat regulations in Minnesota now mandate:

  • Birth to 2 years: Rear-facing infant or convertible seats with internal harness.
  • Ages 2 to 4: Forward-facing seats with internal harness after outgrowing the rear-facing seat.
  • Ages 4 to 9: Booster seats with lap and shoulder belts after outgrowing the forward-facing seat.
  • Under 13: Ride in the back seat if possible.

The main change is keeping children rear-facing longer to better protect their head, neck, and spine. Law enforcement will have the option to educate or issue a citation for violations, which can be dropped if corrected within 14 days.
