US Government Sues TikTok for Allegedly Violating Children’s Privacy Law

The US Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, accusing them of violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The lawsuit alleges that TikTok unlawfully allowed children under 13 to create accounts without parental consent and collected their personal data—such as email addresses, phone numbers, and location—while failing to delete this information upon request from parents. TikTok disputes these claims, asserting that it has taken steps to protect children and improve the platform. The DOJ seeks civil penalties and a court order to enforce COPPA compliance.
