Newborns in Nigeria Have Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

A report by Gavi indicates that newborns in Nigeria are being born with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Specifically, both mothers and their babies under one week old have Colistin-resistant bacteria in their systems, even though they haven’t been treated with Colistin.

The report reveals that, from 2015 to 2017, researchers analyzed 4,907 samples from mothers and babies in Kano and Abuja. They found that 1% of these samples contained genes for Colistin resistance, affecting 41 mothers and eight babies.
