A report by the British Academy and the National Foundation for Education Research (NFER) reveals that changes to A-levels implemented a decade ago have led to a decline in students choosing humanities and arts subjects. The 2015 reforms, which removed AS-level exams and required all A-level exams to be taken after two years, have resulted in students increasingly focusing on science-based subjects. Before the reforms, over half of students took at least one humanities subject, but by 2021-22, only 38% did. The proportion of students studying only STEM subjects has doubled, while the percentage studying only humanities has remained the same. The report highlights concerns about the impact of these changes on higher education and the broader workforce.
