The University of Ibadan has been rocked by protests following the introduction of policies that include a significant tuition hike and electricity rationing. On August 29, 2024, students gathered to express their dissatisfaction, labeling the policies as “obnoxious.” The protests drew a heavy response from the Nigerian Police, resulting in the arrests of student activists, some of whom have since been released. This unrest is partly linked to earlier disciplinary actions against students involved in a disruption during the inauguration of new student union executives in May. The university’s management accused three students—Olamide Gbadegeshin, Aduwo Ayodele, and Nice Linus—of insubordination and unruly behavior.
