After experiencing a layoff in January 2019, the author transitioned to fully remote work to be more present in their child’s life. Starting as an editor for an online publication, she faced misconceptions from others who thought she were freelancing, but found a community of parents benefiting from flexible schedules. The remote job allowed her to navigate the challenges of a twin pregnancy, providing the flexibility to rest and work around her family’s needs. Eventually, the family moved from a cramped Brooklyn apartment to a spacious house in Portland, Maine, thanks to the flexibility of remote work.
