Board Proposes to Consolidate two Elementary Schools

< 1 min read

The Nicholas County Board of Education has proposed consolidating Zela Elementary and Birch River Elementary into Summersville Elementary due to declining enrollment and limited funding. Board President Chip Perrine explained that with only $8,000 per student, the district struggles to cover costs like utilities and staff salaries, leading to financial losses. At a recent meeting, parents, state leaders, and students expressed concerns, with Zela Elementary students like Annie Stover and Olivia Neil sharing emotional reactions about the potential closure, fearing separation from friends and their beloved school community.
