North Carolina lawmakers have approved an additional $463 million to clear the waitlist for private school vouchers under the Opportunity Scholarship program. As of November 4, 32,549 students had received vouchers, with more expected to be awarded now that the new funding is available. The program, which started in 2014-15 with $4.6 million for 1,216 students, was originally designed to help low-income students escape failing public schools. However, it is now open to all families, and its demographic makeup has shifted, with 63% of recipients this year being white, compared to the program’s earlier focus on Black students.
