Between 2007 and 2009, three tragic deaths of children in Kansas child care programs highlighted serious safety issues. Six-month-old Zachary Typer suffocated after rolling off a bed and getting trapped, while seven-month-old Aniyah Boone died from a brain injury and liver laceration when left unattended. Eighteen-month-old Ava Patrick strangled to death after becoming trapped in a fence at a child care center. These deaths, caused by unsafe sleeping conditions, lack of supervision, and negligence, led to the passage of Lexie’s Law in 2010. This law introduced stricter licensing, inspection, and training requirements for child care providers, aiming to prevent such tragedies by ensuring safer practices and better supervision.
