Ibadan Stampede: Queen Naomi and Others Charged for Murder, Granted Bail

It was a black Wednesday on December 18, 2024, when many families and Nigeria as a whole were thrown into mourning following the Ibadan funfair stampede that claimed the lives of 35 children. The funfair was organised by the ex-queen of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekuola; Ibadan media personality, Oriyomi Hamzat and took place at Islamic High School, Ibadan.
Following the tragic incident, Naomi Silekunola, Oriyomi Hamzat, and Abdulahi Fasasi, the Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan were arrested and arraigned before the Oyo State High Court, Ibadan.
The Oyo State Government filed eight charges against the trio. The charges stem from a tragic stampede during a funfair on December 18, 2024, which claimed the lives of 35 children.
On Friday, January 10, 2025, the charge sheet, marked I/05C/2025, was filed at the Oyo State High Court, Ibadan. The government, listed as the complainant, accused the defendants of:
- Conspiracy to commit murder
- Manslaughter
- Criminal negligence
At the moment, the trio has been granted bail. The presiding judge, Justice K.B. Olawoyin of Court 8, ruled in favor of the bail application filed by their counsel. The bail comes with stringent conditions, including:
- A sum of N10 million.
- Two sureties who must provide landed property documents within the court’s jurisdiction.
