The Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) is weighing school closures and consolidations due to declining enrollment and financial challenges, the board announced.
Three proposals, set for a vote on Feb. 19, could take effect in the 2025-26 school year. Options include closing Mare Island Health and Fitness Academy and relocating Vallejo Charter School there, reconfiguring Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy to serve grades TK-5, or closing Loma Vista entirely. Additional consolidations, including Pennycook and Steffan Mano Elementary, are being considered for 2026-27 and beyond.
“We understand these decisions significantly affect families,” said Superintendent Ruben Aurelio. “Our goal is to maintain fiscal responsibility while providing high-quality educational opportunities.”
