A Lexington, Massachusetts family is suing the Boy Scouts of America following the tragic death of their 11-year-old son, Keoni Hubbard, during a camping trip at Manning Lake, New Hampshire, in July 2023. The family alleges negligence and rule violations, pointing to an unqualified 18-year-old boat operator with only an hour of training as a key factor in the accident.
Attorney Tucker Merrigan described the incident as a “systemic failure,” stating that the Boy Scouts violated their own safety policies, including the requirement for a 21-year-old supervisor and proper lookout measures. The boat operator reportedly could not account for the number of children on board.
Keoni’s parents, John and Jenna Hubbard, shared their immense grief, with John calling the experience “hell on Earth.” In their son’s memory, the family is demanding the Boy Scouts establish a water safety program to prevent future tragedies.
