U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing the Department of Justice to bar transgender girls and women from competing in female school sports. Under his interpretation of Title IX, the order calls for “immediate enforcement“ and threatens to cut federal funding from schools that allow transgender athletes to participate.

At the signing ceremony, Trump declared, “The war on women’s sports is over,” standing alongside dozens of women and girls. While the order impacts a small number of athletes—fewer than 10 transgender competitors in the NCAA, according to its president—it is expected to face legal challenges.

This move follows Trump’s campaign ads opposing transgender participation in women’s sports, a key issue in his re-election messaging.
