In a case that has sparked widespread concern, a retired police officer, identified as Owolabi, has been accused of defiling a 17-year-old girl at the Ogudu Area Command premises in Lagos. The incident reportedly occurred on June 29, 2024, when the teenager visited the station to report that her phone had been stolen. Under the guise of assisting her, the officer allegedly tricked her into his office, where she was sexually assaulted.
The victim later reported the incident, prompting an investigation by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) and law enforcement authorities.
On February 11, 2025, the suspect was arraigned before Magistrate Fagbohun at Court 11, and he was subsequently remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Facility. The case has been adjourned to March 11, 2025, awaiting legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The Lagos State Government and DSVA have strongly condemned the incident, emphasizing their zero-tolerance stance on sexual violence. DSVA has reassured the public of its commitment to justice and has urged individuals to report cases of abuse through their toll-free helpline (08000-333-333) or social media platforms (@lagosdsva).
This case highlights the urgent need for accountability in law enforcement and the importance of safeguarding our precious children from abuse, especially by those in positions of power. The alleged actions of the retired officer represent a betrayal of public trust, reinforcing the necessity for strict oversight and swift legal action against perpetrators of sexual violence.
