Tragedy in Anambra: Police Officer Shot Dead by 10-Year-Old Son

A tragic incident occurred in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, where a ten-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his father, Inspector Okolie Amechi, a serving police officer. The heartbreaking event took place on the evening of Saturday, June 14, 2025, inside the family’s residence.
According to a statement released on Monday by the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the young boy was unknowingly handling his father’s service rifle, an AK-47, when it discharged. The bullet struck Inspector Amechi fatally in the back and also injured one of his other children in the hand.
The wounded child is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be responding well. Inspector Amechi, however, was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital by the attending doctor. Authorities have since recovered the rifle, and the officer’s body has been deposited in the morgue.
Reacting to the incident, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed profound sorrow over the loss.
He described the event as deeply unfortunate and assured that the Police Command is committed to supporting the bereaved family during this difficult time. He also emphasized that steps will be taken to prevent such lapses in the future.
While extending condolences to the family and friends of the late Inspector, the Commissioner wished the injured child a speedy recovery. He added that further updates would be communicated as the situation develops.
