Edo Bans Nursery & Primary Graduation Parties, Launches JSS Skill Certification and Textbook Reuse Policy

In a decisive move to strengthen stability, consistency, and quality learning across schools, the Edo State Ministry of Education has rolled out major reforms effective from the 2025/2026 academic year.
Key Highlights of the New Policies
1. Textbook Reuse Policy
Approved textbooks will remain valid for at least four years, ensuring parents can pass them on to younger children and cutting down costs.
2. Graduation Ceremony Guidelines
Only Basic Education (Primary 1–JSS 3) and SSS 3 pupils may have modest, low-cost graduation ceremonies. Lavish parties and “proms” are strictly prohibited.
3. Mandatory Entrepreneurship Certification
All JSS 3 students must acquire practical training and certification in entrepreneurship, technical trades, or vocational skills before moving to the next level.
Government’s Stand
The Commissioner for Education noted that these measures are aimed at:
- Reducing financial pressure on families
- Discouraging wasteful social spending
- Equipping students with life-ready skills
-
Ensuring consistency in classroom resources
Why It Matters
These reforms reflect the government’s commitment to building a disciplined, sustainable, and skills-oriented education system. While welcomed by many stakeholders, the policies may face mixed reactions from some private schools and parents.
These reforms protect families from unnecessary costs, restoring discipline to the school system, and giving every child the tools to thrive. By combining education with practical skills, Edo State is taking a decisive step toward ensuring that the Right to Education is not a promise on paper, but a lived reality for all children.
