The number of student suicides in India touched a record level in 2023, with 13,892 deaths reported. This marks a 6.5% increase from 2022, according to the latest figures from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Overall suicides in India also rose sharply. In 2023, the country recorded 171,418 suicides — a jump of 23.2% compared to 2019 and 27.2% higher than 2013. But suicides among students have risen even faster, increasing by 34.4% since 2019 and almost 65% since 2013. Between 2013 and 2023, India lost 117,849 students to suicide.
