The Enugu State Government has confirmed the arrest of Ozioma Okonkwo, a resident of Enugu and native of Imo State, for defiling his two biological daughters, aged two and five years.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Okonkwo was apprehended late on Saturday, October 25, 2025, following a tip-off from a concerned citizen. The suspect is currently in police custody and will face charges upon the conclusion of the investigation.

The two young children have been placed in a government-approved shelter, where they are receiving medical treatment and psychosocial support. Their mother, described as deeply traumatised, is also undergoing therapy under the supervision of the ministry’s social welfare team.

The government commended the Nigeria Police Force for its swift intervention and reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for sexual and gender-based violence. It described the incident as “a heart-wrenching and unacceptable crime against innocence.”

Commissioner for Children and Gender Affairs emphasized that the administration of Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah remains resolute in ensuring justice for affected children and protection for every child in the state.

The ministry also lauded citizens for their vigilance and called for continued collaboration in protecting the dignity and safety of children and women across Enugu State.

This case represents a grave violation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which guarantees a child’s right to protection from all forms of abuse, neglect, and sexual exploitation, especially by those entrusted with their care.
