International Day of Women Judges: Celebrating Leaders Who Protect Children and Strengthen Justice

The International Day of Women Judges, held on March 10, celebrates the critical role women play in justice and their impact on protecting vulnerable populations, especially children. Women judges bring diverse perspectives and experiences that strengthen accountability, promote fairness, and foster victim-centered approaches, key elements in safeguarding children from abuse, exploitation, and neglect.
Despite advances in public life, women remain underrepresented in senior judicial leadership. Expanding their presence ensures courts are inclusive, reflective of the communities they serve, and responsive to the needs of children and other vulnerable groups.
Women judges are also instrumental in disrupting collusive networks, addressing corruption, and prioritizing decisions that uphold the rights and protection of young people, reinforcing public trust in judicial systems.
The day also highlights initiatives supporting women’s leadership in the judiciary. Programs like the Global Judicial Integrity Network and the Gender Justice Platform provide peer exchange, training, and institutional reforms that empower women judges to make child protection a priority.
Events organized by the International Association of Women Judges, UNDP, and UN Women showcase strategies to expand women’s leadership globally and inspire future generations to champion children’s rights.
The International Day of Women Judges underscores that equal representation in justice is essential for safeguarding children, promoting accountability, and ensuring fair, inclusive, and protective judicial systems for all.
