February 12 2024- The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and increased access to AI tools has sparked a renewed debate on the use of technology in classrooms. UNESCO’s recent suggestion to ban mobile phones in schools has dominated discussions, but this proposal may overlook the fact that smartphones are integral to Gen-Z students’ learning experiences. Despite limited access to laptops or tablets for many students, smartphones are nearly ubiquitous among teens. Advocates argue that banning phones in classrooms could hinder Gen-Z students from leveraging technology’s advantages, such as easy access to educational videos, interactive models, and multisensory materials, which contribute to stronger cognitive connections. While concerns about mental health and social media use exist, proponents emphasize the need to avoid a blanket rejection of technology, urging a nuanced approach to address the complex challenges of the 21st century.
