Health Emergency in Borno as Cholera Cases Surge to 274 in 24 Hours

Borno State has recorded 274 new suspected cholera cases within 24 hours. The outbreak continues to spread across several communities in the state.

Health officials report a total of 4,204 suspected cases so far. These cases have been recorded across treatment centres and oral rehydration points.

Children face the highest risk as the disease spreads. Many affected communities struggle with limited access to clean water and sanitation.

Jere and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council remain the most affected areas. Jere recorded 1,214 cases, while Maiduguri recorded 2,404.

Other affected local government areas include Konduga, Mafa, Monguno, Kaga, and several smaller communities. Together, they account for hundreds of additional cases.

So far, officials have confirmed 39 deaths linked to the outbreak. In contrast, 2,664 patients have recovered and been discharged.

The outbreak has now spread across 118 settlements in 21 communities. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

Dr. Shettima Maina Mohammed, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Human Services, said response efforts have improved outcomes. He noted that the case fatality rate has dropped below one per cent.

In addition, health workers and volunteers have been deployed to affected areas. Authorities have also distributed soap, chlorine, and other preventive materials.

Experts warn that children remain highly vulnerable in such outbreaks. They stress that poor sanitation and unsafe water increase the risk of infection.

Meanwhile, officials urge residents to maintain hygiene practices and seek early treatment. They say this will help protect children and reduce further spread of the disease.
