Ogun Governor Rewards Academic Excellence with N11m, Urges Graduates to Drive Change
The recognition of outstanding graduates of Babcock University by the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, with N11 million academic awards has brought the importance of education systems in the development of responsible, ethical and future-ready generations to the fore.
Abiodun at the post graduate convocation and doctorate hooding ceremony of the university in Ilishan-Remo emphasized that education should not only be about academic excellence, but also about integrity, moral responsibility and service to the society.
The governor’s focus on character development serves to emphasise the need to provide children and young people with a learning environment that supports them both academically and socially and emotionally from a child protection and safeguarding point of view.
Schools and higher institutions are important in developing values in students that will enable them to make safe decisions, respect others and positively contribute to their communities.
Abiodun also pointed out the reforms in education in Ogun State such as teacher recruitment, rehabilitation of schools, and digital learning which he said is a major investment in the future.
The importance of safeguarding in education has been emphasised by education stakeholders, who have all called for education institutions to offer safe spaces, encourage ethical conduct and ensure that learners have the skills to manage challenges.
The governor, in his role as a facilitator of the graduates’ transition to the world of work, urged them to be problem-solvers and institution builders, as the education system plays a significant role in shaping citizens who can protect, support and strengthen society.
