28 Days in Captivity: Tinubu Addresses Fate of Abducted Oyo, Borno Schoolchildren, Teachers

President Bola Tinubu has expressed confidence that the schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo and Borno states will return safely, even as they remain in captivity 28 days after their abduction.
Speaking during his 2026 Democracy Day address on Friday, the President acknowledged that the kidnappings have overshadowed this year’s celebration. He, however, assured Nigerians that efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the abducted children and educators.
“Though this year’s mood is dampened by the abduction of our children in Oyo and Borno, we remain hopeful for their safe return. Democracy without security is not solid enough,” Tinubu said.
The abductions, which occurred last month, sparked nationwide concern and renewed fears about the safety of schools and learners. Families of the affected persons have continued to wait anxiously for positive news as the ordeal enters its fourth week.
Addressing the country’s security challenges, Tinubu said his administration has declared a security emergency and approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 police officers, alongside thousands of military personnel.
He also noted that the 2026 budget allocates a record N5.41 trillion to defence and security. According to the President, Nigeria is strengthening cooperation with international partners, including the United States, France, and other European countries, to combat insecurity.
Tinubu warned bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terrorism to surrender or face the full force of the law. He reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of citizens across the country.
