Nigerian STEM Champions Receive ₦1m Reward After Historic Gold Medal Victory
Three Nigerian children who made history by winning gold medals at the International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy, have received the ₦1 million reward promised by United States-based Nigerian hydrogen specialist, Dr. Michael Taiwo, in a development that has further celebrated their outstanding achievement and highlighted the importance of investing in children’s talents.
The reward followed the students’ remarkable performance at the global competition, where Chimdiebube Onwubiko, Don Anele Munachimso and Egejurum Onyedikachi won a combined four gold medals against competitors from more than 150 countries.
Dr. Taiwo had publicly pledged the cash gift shortly after news of their victory emerged. Hours later, the promise was fulfilled, with education advocate Innocent Chukwudubem confirming that the funds had been transferred to support the young champions.
The gesture has been widely welcomed as recognition of children’s right to have their abilities, hard work and academic excellence acknowledged. Child rights advocates say celebrating children’s achievements not only boosts their confidence but also encourages other young people to pursue education, innovation and scientific discovery.
The three students qualified for the international competition after excelling at the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad, while education advocate Alex Onyia sponsored their participation by covering their registration, visas, travel and accommodation.
