16-Year-Old Mississippi Boy Wins US University Scholarship, Set to Become Engineer at Just 20
A 16-year-old from Mississippi is getting praise for an outstanding academic career after graduating from secondary school two years early and earning a scholarship to study engineering at Hinds Community College.
While many children his age are still completing secondary education, Quinton is already studying Electro-Mechanical Engineering and working towards his goal of becoming an engineer by the age of 20.
Quinton finished his schooling at Acellus Academy High School early, which he says is due to his focus, discipline and consistency. Since then, his academic achievements have paved the way for him to pursue higher education at a very young age.
Quinton has also shown his musical talent outside of academics. He was awarded a music scholarship for his tuba playing and entered the college band.
Quinton noted that leaving school at the age of 16 is still a big milestone for him, particularly as many kids don’t finish secondary school at such a young age.
His mother, Tiana Rhodes, an experienced educator, has also played an important role in supporting his educational journey. Their family had a strong emphasis on education and they encouraged Quinton to focus on excellence, she said.
The SR1 College Preparatory and STEM Academy, who previously worked with Quinton, also celebrated his achievement, calling him an example of dedication and hard work.
Quinton is already planning his next step. He hopes to transfer to Jackson State University, a historically Black university, to continue his engineering studies.
His story is a testament to the power of talent, determination, education, and family support in achieving great things in life.
