8-Year-Old Girl Becomes Brother’s Lifeline in Brave Sickle Cell Transplant Journey
Isabella Brooks, 8, was commended for her bravery in donating her bone marrow to her nine-year-old brother, Isaiah, who is recovering from a bone marrow transplant for sickle cell disease.
The siblings from Leeds, Alabama have been close since childhood, playing together and spending time together as a family. However, Isaiah’s sickness has often caused them to be in pain, have to go to the hospital in an emergency and miss school for long periods.
A bone marrow transplant was the best hope for Isaiah to beat the disease. Among siblings, Isabella was a perfect donor match.
Her parents taught her that she had the right to say no if she was afraid. Isabella chose to help her brother.
“It was because I wanted to help my brother out, I wanted him to live a long life, I love him a lot,” she said.
She said she was nervous, but she did it anyway, and she has been helping Isaiah emotionally recover.
The siblings are separated by hospital walls, but are connected through daily FaceTime calls. They also exchange matching teddy bears containing handwritten messages.
Isaiah has described his sister as “really brave and really kind”, which is a testament to her part in his healing.
Isabella’s choice is an inspiring example of a child’s courage and compassion towards their family.
While Isaiah waits for his sister’s donated stem cells to settle in, he’s already excited to go home and he hopes his recovery will eventually result in a trip to Disney World.
Until now, Isabella waits for the day her brother is well enough to return home and be her playmate again.
