2026 US School Rankings Reveal Best, Worst States for Children’s Education, Safety
A new 2026 report by WalletHub has ranked the best and worst school systems in the United States, highlighting the importance of giving children access to safe, high-quality learning environments.
All 50 states and Washington, D.C., were compared based on 32 indicators related to school quality and safety. To evaluate the quality of each state’s support of children’s education and development, researchers measured such factors as student achievement, school funding, class size, teacher quality, and campus safety.
Massachusetts was the top state, followed by Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Wisconsin. These states did well on a range of indicators related to children’s learning outcomes and school experiences.
Conversely, West Virginia, Alaska and New Mexico had the lowest overall scores, reflecting ongoing difficulties in providing quality education and school environments that are supportive.
The results show the disparities among states, but education experts warn that robust funding does not necessarily lead to positive results for children.
They emphasize that emotional health, caring teachers, safe schools, and positive school environments are all vital to children’s success.
