King’s College Parents Protest Proposed Concession, Raise Concerns Over Children’s Education
Parents and teachers of King’s College, Lagos, have expressed concern about the proposed concession of the federal school to the King’s College Old Boys Association (KCOBA) which could impact on children’s return to school.
The school will reopen for the new academic year on September 13. The Chairman of the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) of the school, Engineer Oluwaleye Peter, however, said parents could suspend resumption if the Federal Government was not clear on its stance on the proposed concession.
Peter spoke at a meeting with parents before hundreds of parents staged a protest on Lagos Island. The protesters held placards that read: “King’s College is not for sale” and “Federal Government, we say no to concession.”
If the government doesn’t take steps to resolve their concerns, parents are ready to take legal action, the PTA chairman said.
If the Federal Government doesn’t say anything, we will suspend resumption and we are going to court,” he said.
Peter also voiced his concern about the transfer of control of the school to the old boys’ association impacting children’s access to quality education.
He claimed that the plan would make the school a business, not a school.
The dispute has left the upcoming school term in limbo, as parents demand more transparency from the Federal Government before children return to school.
The key concern for families is that any decision made about the management of King’s College does not affect children’s access to education, the quality of education and children’s learning.
