Two Babies Abandoned in Separate Abuja Incidents Hours Apart as Police Launch Search for Families
In separate incidents, two babies have been discovered abandoned in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja, which has led to investigations by the police into the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the babies.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command stated that both incidents happened on Wednesday, 2nd September, 2026. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, revealed this in a statement.
The first case was reported around Obodo Street, Kurudu, when a resident, Innocent, heard a baby crying around 5.30pm. He discovered a baby boy wrapped in cloth and left in a carton.
Police officers from the Kurudu Division and staff from the Juveniles and Women Care Department went to the scene and transported the baby to a nearby hospital for a medical evaluation. The child was said to be in “stable” condition.
At around 9.40pm, another resident, Ibrahim, heard a baby girl crying outside his gate in Gwagwalada later that night. He managed to save the child’s life with the help of others in the community and called the police.
The baby girl was rushed to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination and treatment before she was handed over to Social Welfare Development for additional support.
Police said they are continuing to try to find the children’s mothers or relatives and how the babies ended up abandoned.
