Lagos Schools Warned: Parents Must Not Be Forced to Buy Children’s Books, Uniforms From Schools
Lagos State has warned schools against forcing parents and guardians to buy children’s textbooks, uniforms and stationery exclusively from the school or a particular supplier.
The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) issued the warning as schools prepare for the new academic session, reminding families of their consumer rights when purchasing school supplies.
The agency said schools may provide lists of approved books, uniforms and stationery required for learning, but should not unnecessarily restrict families from purchasing equivalent approved items from other suppliers.
“Where equivalent approved products are reasonably available elsewhere, parents and guardians should generally be free to choose where to purchase them,” LASCOPA stated.
From a child protection perspective, the guidance could help reduce unnecessary financial pressure on families preparing children for school. Allowing parents to compare suppliers and prices may make it easier for families to meet children’s educational needs without facing avoidable costs.
LASCOPA also encouraged parents and guardians to report schools or suppliers that engage in practices that undermine their consumer rights.
The agency urged families in Lagos to speak up when they encounter unfair consumer practices, reinforcing its message that consumers are “kings” in the state.
