The writer and her sisters have traditionally enjoyed the open-door policy at their parents’ home in Tauranga, New Zealand. Despite visiting regularly, the writer never stayed for extended periods. Eventually, she got married and bought a house 230 miles away, believing it would be her permanent residence. Meanwhile, her sisters all settled nearby, with one still living at the family home and another residing next door with her own family.
