Canadian school boards are filing lawsuits against major social media companies, seeking damages exceeding C$4 billion

Four Canadian school boards are suing social media giants such as Meta Platforms and Snap for over C$4 billion, alleging that their products have harmed students by being “negligently designed for compulsive use” and causing learning and mental health crises. The lawsuit, brought by the Toronto District School Board, Peel District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board, and Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, also includes TikTok. The boards, representing more than 1,000 schools, are being represented by the Toronto-based law firm Neinstein LLP.
