ActionAid Calls for Strengthened Child Protection as Edo Government Acts on School Violence

Child protection advocates have welcomed the Edo State Government’s swift response to the bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City, but warn that systemic reforms are urgently needed to prevent future abuse. The case, which gained national attention after a viral video showed students violently attacking a fellow pupil, has prompted the state to expel the perpetrators and order their arrest and prosecution.
ActionAid Nigeria described the incident as a serious violation of children’s rights, highlighting broader gaps in safeguarding across Nigerian schools. Andrew Mamedu, the organisation’s Country Director, stressed that the episode is not isolated, pointing to widespread failures in monitoring, reporting, and accountability. He urged schools to adopt proactive child protection measures, including confidential reporting systems, staff training on abuse and conflict management, and strict enforcement of disciplinary policies.
The organization also called on federal authorities, including the Ministry of Education, UBEC, and NHRC, to strengthen nationwide child protection frameworks and ensure consistent oversight of schools. Law enforcement agencies were reminded of their responsibility to investigate and prosecute cases thoroughly, while parents were encouraged to actively support children in reporting abuse.
While Edo State’s actions signal a recognition that safeguarding breaches must be met with both disciplinary and legal consequences, experts warn that isolated interventions are insufficient. Without coordinated reforms involving schools, government bodies, and families, incidents of school-based violence risk becoming recurring threats to children’s safety, education, and overall wellbeing.
