Anambra Court Awards Teen ₦5m, Jails Church Choirmaster 25 Years for Child Sexual Abuse
A 16-year-old girl who was sexually abused under the guise of spiritual deliverance has secured justice after an Anambra State High Court sentenced a church choirmaster to 25 years’ imprisonment, underscoring the need for stronger child safeguarding measures in faith communities.
The Anambra State High Court sitting in Ogidi found James Onuorah guilty of child sexual abuse and offensive conduct after the prosecution established that he manipulated a teenager under the guise of spiritual deliverance.
The court sentenced him to 25 years’ imprisonment for child sexual abuse and seven years for offensive conduct, with both sentences to run concurrently. The court also awarded the affected child N5 million in compensation.
According to court proceedings, the offender allegedly exploited his role as a church choirmaster and teacher to convince the child’s family that she required spiritual intervention before subjecting her to sexual abuse. The abuse resulted in pregnancy, and the child later gave birth.
The judgment sends a strong message that positions of religious or community leadership must never shield perpetrators from accountability. Child protection experts have repeatedly warned that offenders often gain children’s trust through authority, familiarity and manipulation rather than force alone.
The case also highlights the importance of safeguarding policies in churches, schools and community organisations, alongside encouraging families and children to report suspicious behaviour early. Protecting children requires vigilance, safe reporting systems and swift action whenever abuse is suspected.
