Anambra Suspends Head Teacher Over Unauthorized Political Event in School

The Anambra State Government has suspended the head teacher of Community Primary School, Umunze, in Orumba South Local Government Area, for allowing a political rally to take place within the school premises.
State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, announced the indefinite suspension on Wednesday in Awka, describing the act as a violation of the ministry’s directive banning all political, social, and religious gatherings in schools.
The ministry had earlier, on August 14, issued a circular emphasizing that school environments must remain centers of learning, free from political influence and disruption.
Prof. Chuma-Udeh condemned the breach, citing safety concerns and the disruption of academic activities that the rally caused. She added that the state is considering legal action against the organisers for endangering the lives of children.
Earlier that day, Orumba South Local Government Chairman, Mr. Shedrack Azubuike, intervened to halt another unapproved political rally at a primary school, in compliance with the state’s directive. The move comes ahead of the Anambra governorship election scheduled for November 8.
This incident highlights the state’s commitment to maintaining safe and politically neutral spaces dedicated to children’s education and welfare.
Every child has the right to education in a safe environment, free from exploitation, political interference, and danger. Schools must remain sanctuaries for learning, not arenas for politics.
