Backlash Grows as NUT Declares 3-Day Prayer Fast Amid Oyo School Abduction Crisis, Inibehe Effiong Reacts

Reactions have continued to trail the Oyo school abduction crisis after the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, directed teachers to begin a three-day fasting and prayer programme. The exercise is aimed at seeking the safe return of abducted teachers and schoolchildren.
In a circular dated May 17, 2026, the union asked members across the state to observe the spiritual exercise. It also scheduled a joint prayer session every day at 12 noon in schools during the period.
According to the union, the initiative is meant to support ongoing rescue efforts by security agencies. It expressed optimism that collective prayers would help secure the release of those taken.
However, the decision has sparked widespread criticism online. Many Nigerians questioned why a professional body would focus on fasting and prayers amid a serious security emergency.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong also condemned the move in a Facebook post. He said union leaders should have considered stronger action instead. He wrote that a strike or protest would have been more appropriate.
His statement has intensified public debate on how teachers’ unions should respond to insecurity affecting their members. Some commentators believe stronger collective action could increase pressure on authorities to act faster.
Meanwhile, security operations continue in Oyo State following the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area. Nigerian Armed Forces troops are reportedly tracking the attackers through forest routes.
The Defence Headquarters says the incident appears isolated. However, concerns remain over possible insider involvement and weaknesses in school protection systems.
Parents in affected communities remain anxious as school attendance continues to drop. Authorities say rescue efforts are ongoing, but no timeline has been given for their safe return.
