Nearly four years after announcing his divorce from Melinda Gates, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates opened up about the profound impact of the decision, calling it “the mistake I most regret.” In an interview with The Times published on January 25, the 69-year-old billionaire reflected on the end of his 27-year marriage and the toll it took on his personal life.

“There is a certain wonderfulness to spending your entire adult life with one person because of the memories and depth of things you have done and having kids together,” Gates said. He added that his marriage had been a grounding force during his younger years, and he had hoped to recreate the happy family setting he experienced as a child.

Gates and Melinda announced their divorce on May 3, 2021, following what they described as “a great deal of thought and a lot of work” on their relationship. During their marriage, they raised three children and co-founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a globally influential nonprofit focused on improving health and reducing poverty.

Although the two initially planned to continue working together at the foundation, Melinda chose to step down from her role as co-chair in May 2024. Reflecting on this, Gates expressed disappointment, saying the transition added to the challenges they faced in the aftermath of their divorce.

In the interview, Gates did not shy away from calling the divorce a low point in his life, stating that it was “miserable” for both him and Melinda for at least two years. When asked about his life’s failures, he admitted, “The divorce thing was miserable for me and Melinda, and it’s at the top of the list. There are others, but none that matter.”
