Building Child-Friendly Communities for a Better Future

The UNICEF Child-Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) helps local governments create safer, more inclusive, and child-centered cities. By using the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as a framework, CFCI supports policies that prioritize children’s well-being, combat discrimination, and amplify youth voices in decision-making.
A Global Movement for Children’s Rights
Launched in 1996, CFCI has been adopted in over 3,500 municipalities across 40+ countries. In 2020, UNICEF USA introduced CFCI in the U.S., with six cities/counties—Boulder, CO; Decatur, GA; Houston, TX; Minneapolis, MN; Prince George’s County, MD; and Alton, IL—leading the way.
Recognizing Child-Friendly Cities in the U.S.
- August 12, 2023: Houston, TX became the first officially recognized UNICEF Child Friendly City in the U.S.
- February 14, 2024: Minneapolis, MN followed as the second recognized Child Friendly City.
What Makes a City Child-Friendly?
- Communities seeking CFCI recognition must:
- Conduct a child well-being assessment
- Develop a Local Action Plan based on UNICEF USA guidance
- Implement policies that prioritize children’s rights
- Undergo an independent evaluation
Is Your Community Child-Friendly?
Ask the children:
- Do they feel safe?
- Can they access healthcare?
- Do they have parks, schools, and places to gather?
- Are their voices heard?
UNICEF USA works to ensure every child can confidently say “Yes!” to these questions.
