Classes Cancelled Wednesday Following Berwyn Shooting Near Middle School

A tragic scene unfolded Tuesday afternoon near Lincoln Middle School in Berwyn, when a shooting left three people dead in what police are calling a domestic-related incident.
The gunfire erupted just after 4 p.m., close enough to the school that officers immediately placed the campus on lockdown.
Students were carefully escorted out the back of the building while police secured the area, ensuring that children and staff were kept safe throughout the ordeal.
Authorities have confirmed that none of the affected persons were Lincoln Middle School students. Still, the incident left young people in the community shaken.
In response, the Berwyn North 98 School District canceled Wednesday classes at Lincoln Middle School, opening its doors instead as a place for support. Social workers and counselors are available to help children process the shock and fear caused by the violence they witnessed so near their school.
While officials stress that this was an isolated, domestic incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community, the emotional impact on children cannot be overlooked.
Schools are more than centers of learning; they are spaces where children should feel secure, free from violence.
Every child has the right to safety and protection from harm. Upholding this right means ensuring not only physical safety, but also providing children with the emotional support they need to heal when tragedy like this strikes.
