A heartbreaking case is unfolding in Lexington, Kentucky, where a University of Kentucky student is facing serious charges after police discovered her infant’s body hidden in a closet.

Authorities say 21-year-old Laken Snelling was arrested Sunday and charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant.

According to Lexington Police, officers responded to a call last Wednesday about an unresponsive infant, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

An arrest citation revealed that the child’s body was found inside a trash bag in the closet of the residence.

Investigators identified Snelling as the infant’s mother. She is listed as a senior at the University of Kentucky and a member of the Kentucky Stunt team. University spokesperson Jay Blanton confirmed she is currently enrolled, and the team’s roster notes that she is from White Pine, Tennessee.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office is still working to determine the infant’s cause of death.

Every child has the right to life, survival, and protection, as recognized under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. No matter the circumstances, society carries the responsibility to safeguard these fundamental rights.
