A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Enugu East has remanded 47-year-old Anthony Onyeukwu in custody over the death of his 11-year-old houseboy, Goodluck John. The Commissioner for Gender, Ngozi Enih, stated that the remand is part of Enugu State’s efforts to address child abuse. Onyeukwu was arrested after a tip-off from the ministry’s whistleblower channels suggested that Goodluck’s death resulted from abuse in the household. Onyeukwu initially claimed the boy died from illness at Park Lane Hospital in Enugu, but hospital records contradicted this, showing no admission or death registration. He had also buried Goodluck’s body in Abia State without notifying authorities.

During the arraignment of Anthony Onyeukwu last week, Police Prosecutor Inspector Calista Ifeanyi argued that his actions violated Enugu State’s Revised Criminal Code and emphasized the state’s commitment to protecting children’s rights, as outlined in the Child’s Rights and Responsibility Law of 2016.

Onyeukwu is charged with unlawfully killing 11-year-old Goodluck John on October 15, 2024, at his residence in Enugu. The charge sheet cites the offense under Section 274(1) of the Criminal Code. The Chief Magistrate remanded Onyeukwu in the Correctional Centre, Enugu, and adjourned the case to November 20, 2024, pending a report from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
