DNA Showdown for Mohbad’s Son Puts Child Protection in Spotlight

The family of late singer Mohbad has issued a statement clarifying the process surrounding the DNA paternity proceedings for his son, Liam, as the case continues in a Lagos Magistrate Court.

The clarification emphasizes that the laboratories used for the test were selected through a joint process involving all parties and the court. Three internationally recognised laboratories will conduct the testing: DNA Diagnostics Center in the United States, AlphaBiolabs, and Advanced Histopathology Laboratory Limited in the United Kingdom. Concerns about the ability of two labs to process embalmed tissue samples were immediately reported to the court to maintain scientific integrity.

The next phase, supervised collection of tissue samples, is scheduled for April 7, 2026. Welfare officers will oversee the process, ensuring that the child’s safety and dignity are protected and that the testing is conducted in a controlled, ethical environment.

Beyond the legal and technical aspects, the case underscores Liam’s fundamental rights as a child. Access to accurate information about parentage is central to his identity, emotional wellbeing, and legal recognition. Delays, uncertainty, or public controversy could expose him to stigma or deny him the care and support to which he is entitled.

The court’s decision to use independent and internationally recognised laboratories reflects a focus on safeguarding Liam’s rights. Transparency, supervision, and scientific credibility are prioritized to ensure that the child’s welfare remains central to all proceedings. Protecting his identity, dignity, and access to parental care is the overriding concern.
