The Edo State government has postponed the reopening of all public and private schools, initially set for September 9, 2024, due to the tension and challenges caused by the recent fuel price increase. The decision was announced in a memo by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, to alleviate stress on parents and guardians. The government has advised close supervision of children during this period. The All Progressives Congress criticized the suspension as “expensive political gimmickry.”
The Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Peter Uwadiae-Enosorogbe, criticized the Edo State government’s decision to postpone school reopening due to the fuel crisis. He argued that the government should not compromise children’s education for political reasons and called for the reversal of the decision, stating it harms students and parents alike.
In contrast, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, assured that the fuel crisis is temporary and will not affect the planned school resumption. Meanwhile, Benue State Commissioner of Information, Matthew Abo, stated there are no plans to postpone school openings in his state, and Borno State Commissioner for Information, Prof. Usman Tar, mentioned he needed to confirm any such plans with the education authorities.
