The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) has raised concerns over the alarming rate of malnutrition in North Eastern Nigeria, revealing that 3.7 million children in the region are stunted, wasted, or anaemic.
This was disclosed during a high-level roundtable discussion convened by the Borno State Government in collaboration with FAO to scale up the production and utilisation of the Tom Brown initiative—a low-cost, locally sourced solution aimed at combating malnutrition.
Held at the UN House in Abuja, the event brought together federal ministries, donors, UN agencies, and NGOs to strategize on food security interventions. According to the Northeast Nutrition Sector, investments in Tom Brown could save Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States an estimated $120 million annually.
The discussions come amid a worsening food crisis in Nigeria. Recent Cadre Harmonisé figures indicate that 25 million Nigerians are currently food insecure, with projections showing a rise to 33.1 million by mid-2025 across 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
