Oyo School Abduction: FG Arraigns Five Ansaru Suspects Over Schoolchildren’s Abduction, Teachers’ Killings
Five suspected members of the Ansaru terrorist organisation were arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday over the kidnapping of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State and the killing of two teachers during the kidnapping.
The suspects, two of whom are alleged to be Ansaru commanders and three others, are charged with terrorism, kidnapping and beheading of the teachers. Justice Salim Ibrahim directed the accused to be remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) and postponed the case to September 24 for trial.
The suspects were connected to the attack on schools in Oriire on May 15, in which dozens of children and teachers were abducted, leaving families and communities traumatised, according to the Federal Government. The attack sparked renewed worries about the safety of children in and around schools, as the children were rescued weeks later after being held captive.
The prosecution is a significant step towards holding perpetrators of child rights violations and those responsible for children’s care accountable. But they emphasise that justice should not end at the criminal trial and that there should be better protection measures to prevent attacks on schools.
The case also underscores the ongoing dangers faced by children in conflict-affected communities in Nigeria, where schools are increasingly becoming targets of armed groups.
Child protection stakeholders state that the outcome of the trial will be closely monitored not only as a measure of accountability, but as a measure of the government’s commitment to ensuring that every child can learn in safety, without fear of violence or abduction.
