FG Orders Immediate Closure of 41 Unity Schools Over Student Safety

The Federal Government has ordered the immediate closure of 41 Federal Unity Colleges across northern and central Nigeria due to rising security concerns and threats to students’ safety.
The directive, issued on November 21, 2025, by the Ministry of Education, comes amid recent attacks on schools, including the abduction of students in Niger and Kebbi states.
The circular, signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education on behalf of the Minister, Tunji Alausa, instructed principals to enforce the closures immediately to prevent further security breaches. President Bola Tinubu has also directed the Minister of State for Defence to oversee rescue operations in affected states.
The closures follow a surge in attacks on schools across northern Nigeria, with mass kidnappings of students becoming an ongoing threat since the Chibok abductions in 2014. UNICEF and other global bodies have repeatedly condemned the attacks, urging the Nigerian government to prioritise learners’ safety.
This action underscores children’s right to safety and protection from abduction, violence, and threats, as guaranteed under Nigeria’s Child Rights Act, ensuring every child can learn in a secure and protected environment.
