FG Unleashes New Drive to Protect, Empower Special Needs Children Through Arts Initiative

The Federal Government has reinforced its commitment to child protection and safeguarding for children with special needs, emphasizing the need for inclusive systems that protect their rights while nurturing their talents.

This position was highlighted by the Director General of the National Gallery of Art, Ahmed Sodangi, at the unveiling of the Oyegbola Adegbola Art Gallery in Abuja. Represented by the Director of Information Service, Emeka Odialu, Sodangi noted that safeguarding children with special needs must go beyond basic care to include deliberate efforts that prevent neglect, discrimination, and social exclusion.

He explained that creating safe and supportive platforms, such as art exhibitions, enables children with special needs to express themselves freely, build self-confidence, and actively participate in society. According to him, such initiatives are critical in addressing stigma and ensuring that vulnerable children are not left behind.

Stakeholders at the event stressed that effective safeguarding requires early identification of children’s abilities, sustained parental involvement, and access to inclusive education and creative opportunities. These measures, they said, help protect children from marginalization while equipping them with skills for independence.

The mother of the artist, Dr. Eunice Adegbola, called on parents to recognize and develop the strengths of their children, noting that talent development is a key component of long-term protection and empowerment.

Also speaking, Creative Director of the gallery, Asha Adedayo Samuel, underscored the importance of inclusion in all sectors, warning that excluding children with special needs increases their vulnerability.

He urged government at all levels to implement policies, provide funding, and create programmes that prioritise the safety, dignity, and full participation of children with special needs in national development.
